Join us on Saturday, October 1 at 7:00PM for our first Nachtmusik concert of the season. Mezzo-Soprano, Paula Schaefgen, and Bass, Alvaro Ramirez will present Con Brio! An operatic recital of arias and duets from La Gioconda, Migon, Il Barbiere di Siviglia, Don Carlo, La Cenerentola, and more! They will be accompanied by pianist Anatoliy Torchinskiy who will also play some solo piano music by Debussy.
As always, admission to this concert is free. Donations will be graciously accepted. We encourage you to invite your friends and family; we especially want children to be exposed to the music we offer, so bring them along! There will be a light reception following the concert.
Paula Schaefgen, mezzo-soprano, has sung extensively with the following Midwestern opera companies: da Corneto Opera, Elgin Opera, Music By the Lake, Chicago Chamber Opera, Music On Stage, Norris Center Chorale, DuPage Opera Theater and the Lakeside Singers. She has performed the roles of “Prince Orlofsky” in Die Fledermaus, “Mr. Siebel” in Faust, “Rosina” in Il Barbiere di Siviglia, “Flora” in La Traviata, “Kate Pinkerton” in Madama Butterfly, “2nd Lady” in Magic Flute, “La Suora Zelatrice” in Suor Angelica, “Kate Stanley” in Pirates Of Penzance and “Dorcas” in Seven Brides For Seven Brothers.
Ms. Schaefgen would like to thank Mr. Alvaro Ramirez, her voice teacher for the past eight years, for giving her the gift of finding her true voice and teaching her how to use it.
Alvaro Ramirez, bass, is a sought after performer in the Chicagoland area, across the United States and Mexico. His credits include lead bass roles for the following companies: Du Page Opera, Bowen Park Opera, Opera de Nuevo Leon, Festival Internacional Mazatlan, The Opera Factory, Chicago Opera Theater, Chicago Chamber Opera, Chicago City Symphony, Amarillo Opera, Opera North, Opera Memphis, Eugene Opera, Miami Lyric Opera, Intermountain Opera, Opera San Luis Obispo, Harrisburg Opera and The Pittsburgh Opera. His roles include: “Don Pasquale”, “Attila”, “Mustafa” in L’Italiana in Algeri, “Sarastro” in The Magic Flute, “Don Alfonso” in Cosi fan tutte, “Figaro” in Le nozze di Figaro, “Fillippo II” in Don Carlo, “Mephistopheles” in Faust, “Colline” in La Boheme, “Don Basilio” in Il Barbiere di Siviglia, “Zaccaria” in Nabucco, “Raimondo” in Lucia and “Timur” in Turandot.
Mr. Ramirez was the co-founder and Artistic Director of the da Corneto Opera Ensemble, acting as principal coach and chorus master for the company for over 15 years. He also founded the da Corneto Opera Studio, where he has been teaching for the past 18 years in Lake, Du Page and Cook counties. He is fluent in Spanish, French and Italian. Other credits include participation in the Pittsburgh Opera Young Artist Program, the Glimmerglass Opera Young Artist Program and the Opera North Young Artist Program.
Anatoliy Torchinskiy, pianist, was born in Kiev, Ukraine. Mr. Torchinskiy immigrated to Chicago, where he received both his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in piano performance, from Chicago Musical College at Roosevelt University. Mr. Torchinskiy began accompanying professionally in 1996. He has been heard in Italy, Great Britain, New York, Michigan, Wisconsin and the Chicago area. He currently divides his time between his performing and teaching careers.
