Second Grade

Welcome to Mrs. Janetzke’s 2nd Grade web page!

I am very excited to be teaching for my second year at Bethany for the 2011-2012 school year. I am very eager to work with the students and families to provide a Christ-centered learning environment for the class.

I graduated from Concordia University, River Forest, in 2006 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Lutheran Elementary Education and a concentration in music. Before coming to Bethany I taught 4 years at St. Philip Lutheran School on the far north side of Chicago. In July 2010 I married Joshua Janetzke, a 2000 Concordia graduate, and although he is not a teacher, he is a wonderful and patient teacher husband! I am originally from Peoria, IL where my mom and dad still live, and my sister and her husband live in Mahomet, IL.

In addition to teaching second graders, I am the musical director for the elementary musical, a track coach, an assistant organist for Bethany Lutheran Church and organizer and player on the Bethany Church League Women’s Volleyball team. I am a big Packers fan and also enjoy watching and attending NASCAR races. Playing clarinet in the University Band at Concordia University is also a hobby of mine.

What to expect in Second Grade:
Second Grade is such an exciting year for parents and children. An important part of second grade is the development of an inquiring mind through asking “why” questions. This is especially developed in Social Studies, Science, and Reading. A child’s natural curiosity is used to develop a life-long love of learning and finding out reasons why things happen. Second graders spend a lot of time asking questions and searching out answers while also developing critical thinking skills. They will also develop study skills when preparing for tests.

Second graders also learn to be responsible. They will be expected to complete their work in and after school. Students will learn to keep track of their own possessions (coats, backpacks, homework, etc.). Second graders also become more independent in their work and study habits. They begin to learn how to work in groups, assigning specific tasks to members of the group. It is important that you, the parent, support the teacher by helping your child take responsibility for themselves and their belongings.

Please feel free to contact me with any questions in person or by email at kjanetzke@bethanylcs.org. God’s blessings on our year!

Theme for the 2011-2012 School Year: SAVED BY GRACE – SENT TO SERVE

“For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.” Ephesians 2: 8-10
